Rethinking TV content
Fix-’em-up shows get a makeover
The slump in the American housing market could leave cable television networks with potential fixer-uppers on their hands.
Home improvement shows continue to saturate the dial but, with the housing heyday long over, networks may be looking to retool their content.
Anna Gecan, vice-president of content for HGTV Canada, says property shows generally weather the ups and downs of the real estate market but acknowledges that a happy ending is no longer a given for some shows filmed in U.S. locations.
“So that in more cases, we’ve had to accept the fact that some of the homes in shows aren’t going to either be sold or the couple that’s featured isn’t going to actually buy a house,” Gecan said. “But the drama of the story is still there for viewers.”
